Tips for Dockside BBQs

After a long day on the water sailing, tubing or even fishing, how nice would it be to pull back into your slip, wander over to the dock and enjoy a relaxing dinner after a fun day on the water? While it’s always a treat to pack a picnic and dine on the boat, often times there simply isn’t room to spread out and truly relax. Follow these tips from the professional boaters to prepare a dockside feast that will not only be delicious, but simple and a time to make wonderful memories.

If you’re fortunate enough to have a slip on a dock that has a picnic table nearby, you’ll have a great place to set up a wonderful mean. Take advantage of the awesome deals offered by Groupon coupons and invest in a portable grill from the huge selection and value available through West Marine.  Rinse out your coolers and start planning, preparing and packing. Plan to store the cooler in your car while you’re out on the boat for the day.

The night before your BBQ, lay down a dozen bottles of water in the freezer to be used in lieu of ice for the coolers. Select a variety of chicken, beef and pork cuts and marinate them overnight. Store in an airtight gallon zip lock bag for easy transport. Space is at a premium when packing for a dockside feast!  Select side dishes that can be prepared in advance and stored in Tupperware for transport in the coolers. Fill a bag of ice for drinks.

Using a canvas dry bag, pack paper products, flatware and a tablecloth. Be sure to include extra trash bags to make clean up easy. Pack plenty of charcoal or butane for the grill as well as grilling utensils. Condiments should also be placed in the cooler even if unopened. You’ll want to ensure sufficient space in the cooler for the return trip. Place a selection of drinks in the second cooler. Enjoy your dockside feast. No doubt appetites will be huge after spending a day on the water!
